I was living life on the wild side today and attended the Buninyong Marvellous Marmalade Fair. You may be thinking wow she must love her marmalade (not really) and you are most likely impressed by the fact that there is a whole fair dedicated to Marmalade and so you should be!
It was very serious business with the Mayor in attendance and the best in show achieved a perfect score of 20/20. The winners looked so pleased with themselves and the winning entries (from all over Australia) are sent to compete in the International Marmalade Awards in Cumbria in early March. These were referred to as the "Marmalashes" and the "Marmy Army" had been called to action.
The expert judges and ladies from the CWA really knew their business and left me educated and seriously questioning my culinary skills and abilities. It also got me thinking about family recipes and the passing on of this information through generations. I more than likely turn to google for a recipe or clarification and have never made a jam or preserve in my life. Life moves so quickly now and the more simple satisfying tasks like making your own marmalade for me are being missed.
I don't think I will be rushing to the grocery store tomorrow to buy a box of citrus fruit but it did get me thinking about slowing down a little, creating traditions and memories and made me miss my late nanny just that little bit more today.
